Online High School Accreditation

January 23rd, 2010

Perhaps the most important criteria for choosing an online high school or online academy is being an accredited institution. It should not be just any accreditation, either. The accreditation should include oversight and not just a license to do business.

What is accreditation? It is a process of assessing a school’s program and policies to see if it meets the criteria set by an outside agency. If the school meets the minimum criteria, it is given the accreditation. The accreditation is actually a safety mechanism to protect students, schools and employers.

Proper accreditation is important to ensure the online academy’s quality. With accreditation, other schools and employers will recognize your diploma and the course you have taken if you need to transfer. Opportunities to further your education may be lost if the school you attend is considered to be a fake or not properly accredited.

How will you know if an online high school is properly accredited? There are some schools out there that go as far as making up their own fake accreditation. In fact, accreditation from the wrong source, such as an accreditation mill, is worse than no accreditation at all.

A fake accreditor may have misleading names that imply that it is a national or regional accreditor when it is not. It may also have a logo that looks like the logo of a legitimate accreditor. It could also be that its website has too little information and does not include names or contact information aside from a phone number and email address.

The best way to verify the legitimacy of an accrediting agency is to go to the the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) website. Its database lists all US accrediting organizations that are recognized either by the CHEA or by the US Department of Education or both. This includes the six regional accreditors, Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation and the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).

Though both types of accreditation, national and regional, are accepted by employers, it is best to know the difference and which one your online school uses. Many of the regional schools do not accept transfer credits from a nationally accredited school. If you are taking classes for your own enjoyment or satisfaction, this won’t be a problem, but if you plan on furthering your education it will benefit you to know.

Your time and money are important, so make sure you are not going to waste them on unaccredited programs and schools. You could be risking valuable job or educational opportunities with diplomas from or course work in fake schools. You have a right to quality education, and, whether you are attending an online high school or a brick-and-mortar institution, the proper accreditation ensures that you will get this.

If you are thinking about attending an online academy be sure it has the appropriate accreditation in place. Classes are available for online high school as well as middle school and a number of elementary school courses.

Hiring An SLP For Your School

January 9th, 2010

The study of language and human communication is a valued and worthy science. However, the people who diagnose and help to treat difficulties or challenges in communication are called speech language pathologists. An SLP is specifically trained to diagnose speech issues at an early stage. That’s why they are so important in schools.

The career path of SLPs starts with their education. Both speech pathologists and audiologists must have a certain number of courses under their belts. Typically they will learn about anatomy, acoustics and linguistics, as well as courses on counseling and parent training. They study phonetics and focus on learning about speech disorders, while also having a strong education in neurology and psychology.

A certified SLP will have training in clinical situations and settings, as well as in schools. They must spend quite a bit of time under the guidance and tutelage of a mentor in their field. With experienced help, they learn all the skills they need to help them in their future career helping others.

Speech language pathologists assess hearing, speech and language. They are involved in the prevention, identification, diagnosis and treatment of both children and adults. They educate the public and their client base on hearing impairments and communication disorders. An SLP will provide consultative advice to a team of otherwise focused professionals or they can offer more direct treatment services.

An SLP in a school setting knows that children are best assessed at the earliest age possible. Most school children are assessed in kindergarten either one on one or in groups in an informal and brief test. This first assessment test may last only five minutes, and usually involves having the child or children say their name, pronounce the names of certain items and answer open ended questions. This test is usually just to evaluate articulation, language fluency, and several other aspects of speech.

If it is found that a child needs further assessment or testing, the next phase is for the SLP in the school setting to spend about two hours with a child, one on one. The next test will include a physical examination of the mouth and throat and other parts involved in verbal communication. Use of sentences and words will be tested, as well as seeing how the child produces sounds in general. This longer visit will include tests for expressive and spontaneous language, as well as a hearing test.

As an SLP learns a child’s particular case history and diagnoses the reasons behind why a child is having a communication challenge, they will discover the best method of treating the child. This will involve the family and the school as well as the child themselves. A good speech language pathologist knows that a challenge identified early on for a child is a challenge the child can be taught to overcome. With help from teachers, parents and other critical social systems, the child may regain or develop successful communication skills.

An SLP placed in the school system can help identify challenges with communication, language and speech disorders early on. Given the nature of their strong education and certification requirements, they come very highly trained and experienced already. In countries like Canada, one in ten citizens is living with a communication disorder. Early diagnosis and personal treatment options are the best way to resolve language and speech disorders. This is exactly what an SLP is trained for and prepared to do in a school.

Better Grades With Speed Reading

December 29th, 2009

People sometimes get frustrated because they fall behind when reading and learning due to the huge amounts of reading material they must absorb for school or work. So many books are being written worldwide, that readers sometimes have difficulty keeping up with the production of fiction and non-fiction works. It can be really amazing trying to keep up with it all ” dont you think.

In the speedily changing and highly competitive business world, with new products and services, and new upgrades introduced every week, speed reading really comes in handy. Most corporate millionaires now read two or three business related books every week. That’s a lot of work for those unfortunates who dont have speed reading abilities.

SPEED READING enables people to absorb up to twice or three times what they normally read in the same time.

Reading researchers in the past determined that the brain is capable of comprehending and cataloging from 10,000 to 50,000 units of information every minute. The length of a unit is about one word. The body’s five senses are receptors for information, which it transfers to the subconscious mind to be recorded for posterity. When the conscious mind needs information, it is recalled from the subconscious. Then it surfaces the necessary data for processing and use, much like a computer.

An interactivity exists between the brain, which well just imagine that the computer CPU, and the mind which consists of thoughts and memories. All data gets processed in such a way that we can learn it.

The data that we receive, process and evaluate comes from our five physical senses. With that data, our mind makes decisions, choices and judgments. We learn through our five senses (i.e. sight, smell, hearing, touch, taste), which are already pre-programmed to respond automatically.

A good example of pre-programmed response: Consider the example of the teen boy who smells pizza and what his reaction is. It is similar to Pavlov’s dog, because his senses send a message to the brain in the form of a brain-work.

The perception of feeling our favorite food is a mental exercise, compared to the reaction of swallowing which is physical. Therefore, brain and mind is where the action is and the body is where the reaction is.

Learning this method of speed reading will encourage the use of three of the five senses. That is a method that will strongly influence your mind to remember, recall and understand; beyond that, well teach you Methods for becoming a better and more efficient reader.

Follow the instructions and you will turn into a speed reader who loves to read and improve the quality of his or her own life. We expect great, positive successes from you with great improvements in many areas of your life.

Statistics: The average American high school graduate (I know this sounds strange, but many are graduating without the ability to read at an eighth grade level), reads at about 200 words per minute. A college student reads 20% faster at 300 words per minute. It does not matter what your baseline or starting reading speed is, your potential reading speed after using these techniques will be faster and your potential is truly unlimited. This is because scientists who have researched the human brain/mind agree that our potential is unlimited. Double-triple-quadruple your reading speed, theres no limit.

You can expect to learn how to achieve your greatest potentials as a reader, business person, student, etc. This is because you’re becoming an avid speed reader and a complete success in life.

Be Dynamic Through Speed Reading will help you become totally unlimited in your power and ability to do, be, and have all that you desire in life, whether its great grades or financial success. Dr. Jay Polmar is the Master of the art of speed learning, accelerated learning and speed reading and has helped over 100,000 students worldwide become perfect learning machines.

Beginning Tutoring.

November 13th, 2009

When beginning with a new tutor, it’s important for both the student and teacher to come to an agreement on what specifically the tutor does. It’s first important to realize that no tutor has a magic grade wand that will fix your grades overnight, regardless of what he or she advertises. However, once the tutor and student have come to an agreement, and both work hard to uphold their ends of the bargain, then great strides may be taken.

It is first important for the student to realize that it is a not a tutors job to do homework. Having a tutor present for homework is not only a waste of money and time, it actually hinders learning. Learning a new subject is difficult, and should be. If a math tutor corrects your mistakes before you have time to think about them and learn them, you’ll likely make the same mistake later.

The agreement should outline what the tutor should bring to the table. Every student should expect the tutor to know when exams are coming, and what material is being worked on. This should come from constant contact with teachers and parents to get the job done.

How much time should a student spend preparing for a tutoring session in addition to the time he or she spends doing homework. Experience suggests that an hour out of session per hour in session is the right amount. This helps to maximize the effectiveness of the tutoring session. It also ensures that a student has time to practice what is taught by the tutor.

Working with an English tutor is a different story. In English, a student must spend hours reading or writing, for each hour they will spend discussing their work with a tutor. There is absolutely no point in working with a tutor until you have finished the required reading for your course, or spent several hours revising a paper that you would like professional help with.

The final important facet of the tutoring agreement is a student’s goals. These should be partly class related (a certain grade) and partly additional learning to work on when the grades are back on course. Some good examples of extra learning could be learning to use a computer program like Excel, or reading books from a different author (in English tutoring). Remember that the end goal should always be to maximize learning, not grades.

Hopefully you now have the information necessary to begin working with a new tutor. With the proper agreement of how time should be spent, you’ll no doubt have a good experience. If your tutor is not living up to the goals you set forth, then you should start seeking a new one immediately.

Toys With Educational Benefits

November 7th, 2009

The first years of our life are totally determined by one thing: Playing. Of course it is not a waste of time; it is a very important educational element and necessary part of our growth process. But there are different ways of playing and there are toys that make somehow more sense to educate our youngsters than others.

In my studies about the psychology of children I have focused on puppet buggies (German: Puppenwagen) for some time and tried to figure out if there is any educational benefit the buggies or comparable objects could have in the life of children. The idea of a puppet buggy was invented to some extend in Germany and a lot of puppet buggy producers are also located in Germany. Even the great psychologist Sigmund Freud who also contributed the understanding of the psychology of children has indirectly motivated some thoughts about puppet buggies.

Many children have dolls and most parents expect this or even like the idea of having grand children so early. They like to see that their children care about something else. It might only be a puppet, but still teach them an important lesson: To take care. And this is also the reason why you should think about a puppet dolly (Puppenwagen). Even if you ask a professor for psychology at the university he will tell you not to underestimate the things you can learn from owning a dolly and treating a puppet a bit more like a real child.

Thus children learn that if you have a puppet or child it is not only about that. It is also about many other equipment the puppet needs like any other real human being also needs many other equipment. You should not be too scared that you child will also ask for many more utensils. important in a puppet’s life. Children will still understand the difference between a puppet and a real child. And if they ask you to buy more equipment for their puppets you might explain that puppets do not need that many things. But encourage them to buy this later for their real children.

More than 50 percent of the offsprings want to have more extra things for their dolls. This shows that they do not want something directly for themselves but for something they just look after. If one thinks about this idea it is a very important step in the development of a child. And this step should maybe be supported. There is maybe no need of buying a Puppenwagen but in general one must be aware of the fact that this developmental step of our children is important and has to be supported in some way.

Get more useful information about the education of your children and learn about puppet buggies on my site about Puppenwagen. I do research in psychology and mainly focus on educational toys for children (like Puppenwagen) at the University of Munich in Germany.

Homeschooling and the Family

November 4th, 2009

If a survey by the National Center For Education Statistics is to be believed, roughly 1.1 million children underwent home schooling in 2005 alone. That’s a lot of children. Not so long ago, homeschooling used to be a radical statement – something like a declaration of independence.

It was the conservative Christians who pushed for homeschooling in the 1980’s and legalized it in every State. But nowadays the typical homeschooling pupil is not religiously motivated.

Later surveys show that parents are really fed up with the public school system where much of the learning is superficial and compulsory. They are also concerned about the negative environment in school, which ranges from drugs and abuse to negative pressure from their peers.

Because of this, we have a surprising mix of people who make up the homeschooling world of today. They cut across all religious creeds and all regional borders. Their main aim is providing meaningful and productive learning through a method that strengthens the bond between the various members of the family.

All these families have one major thing in common – a long enduring commitment to the sanctity of childhood. The children of these families are accorded a primary position. Many believe, and, I think, rightly so, that home schooling allows parents to bring up their children in a more natural and caring environment.

Public schools can make a child anxious, subservient and downright mean. Children who receive their education at home are protected from these damaging, negative influences until they attain an age where they can withstand them.

Home-schooling draws the whole family into the quasi religious task of teaching. Everyone has a role to play. Both the parents together form a bond with the children. Any experience can be turned into an learning experience. Both the parents are aware of exactly what is going on in their child’s head.

Parents also have a greater control over the kind of religious and moral values that the child is learning. Even watching a movie together can become an educational experience. Trips to the libraries, zoos, museums and other places become educational experiences as well as recreational ones.

A home-schooling family is primarily dependent on the income of one earning member. That means that often spending has to be curtailed and proper planning of expenditure is necessary. This helps to bring the family members together and everybody gets involved in the process of not spending money.

Merely having a parent at home to supervise, to nurture and to care for the children brings with it a great deal of love and caring. Even the husband takes part and there is just no room for complacency.

Yes, problems still do crop up, and there will be a lot of misgivings in your mind, but when you know that your kids can always count on you, and your kids know it too, then homeschooling becomes a very rewarding experience.

Math Comic Strips Will Soon Release “The Innovative Dr. Knowledge”

October 28th, 2009

Our web site of math comic strips was developed for one primary reason…to offer a way to help teach math to our nation’s children. In this fast-paced world of television, video games and other distractions, we knew that this would prove to be a formidable challenge. Math is complicated and boring to too many children, and well, too much like “work”. We realized that we would need a way to make learning math exciting and fun.

We decided upon the comic book format for a number of reasons. For starters, the humble comic book has stood the “test of time”. Before the 24 hour cartoon network was even thought of, children would huddle, under their blankets, late at night, comic and flashlight in hand, and read about their favorite “hero”. Comic books are an ideal visual learning tool, very portable, requiring no additional attachments or electricity, or even an internet connection.

We are happy to announce that we will soon be releasing our flagship item, an educational math comic called “The Innovative Dr. Knowledge”. While Dr. Knowledge is not a “Super Hero” in the classic sense of the word (he has not been bitten by an insect or arrived from another planet), he does possess some incredible math skills. He was able to acquire these skills by doing his math homework and studying other subjects as well. He is able to utilize these abilities to solve some incredible crimes and problems. Our hope is that children will become enchanted with his adventures and have their own desire to study math.

Bobby lost his mother at a young age, and had a rather difficult childhood in many respects. To make a long story short, his father decided to take him on a trip to help encourage and motivate his son. As fate would have it, he ended up on an island, and it was here that he embraced his love of math. Math helped him to solve many problems that the island presented him with, and through these adventures he was able to see the practical applications of math.

When he eventually made his way back to civilization, he pursued his math education on a more formal level eventually earning a PhD in Mathematics at a prestigious university. Using his math abilities he was able to acquire great wealth, and answer a calling in his life…to use math to solve crimes and problems and make the world a better place.

We hope that you will enjoy reading our flagship comic book, “The Innovative Dr. Knowledge”. We hope that you will join us in helping to promote math to our nation’s children. Who knows, math comic strips may never be the same…

Preparing Your Child for Success In School

October 28th, 2009

The road to success in school begins early. Good health, loving relationships, and opportunities to learn all help Preschool children do well later in life. But many parents Wonder, “How can I give these things to my child?” This section is for all of you who have asked this question. It’s for parents, grandparents, and others who want to know What to do to help young children get ready for school. Throughout the preschool years, you can do many simple things to help your child grow, develop, and have fun learning.

Preschoolers need opportunities to exercise and develop physical coordination. To learn to control large muscles, children need to throw balls, run, jump, climb, and dance to music. To learn to control small muscles, particularly in the hands and fingers, they need to colour with crayons, put together puzzles, use blunt-tipped scissors, and zip jackets. In kindergarten, they will build upon these skills. Parents of youngsters with disabilities should see a doctor as soon as a problem is suspected. Early intervention can help these children develop to their full potential.

Youngsters must believe that, no matter what, someone will look out for them. Show that you care about your children. They thrive when they have parents or other caregivers who are loving and dependable. Small children need attention, encouragement, hugs, and plenty of lap time. Children who feel loved are more likely to be confident.

Recognize that there are many ways to find good care. Ask friends and neighbours. Look in the Yellow Pages of your telephone book under “Child Care Centres.” Look in the classified ads of your local newspaper, or place an ad of your own. Put up notices on your church or synagogue bulletin board, in grocery stores, local community centres, or at the employment office of local colleges or universities. Look for notices that other people have put up.

If you think about it, school, while very important, does not really take up very much time. In the United States, the school year averages 180 days; in other industrialized nations, the school year can extend up to 240 days, and students are often in school more hours per day. So, the hours and days a child is not in school are important for learning, too.

These include good health and physical wellbeing, social and emotional maturity, language skills, an knack to resolve matters and think creatively, and general knowledge about the world. www.ebooksgallery.co.uk
